What is Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?

Mastopexy is a surgical procedure for correcting drooping or sagging breasts and can go hand-in-hand with a breast reduction or a breast augmentation. In cases of minor ptosis (sagging), sometimes a Breast Augmentation alone can correct the problem. In some cases, only a breast lift is carried out with either a breast augmentation or a breast reduction. Your breast volume will not change but the breast shape will be more perky.

Who is this for?

Mastopexy is designed for women with drooping or sagging breasts. In some cases, a women’s breast may have been stretched considerably due to pregnancy,  breast feeding or weight gain. The breast may have too much  skin and not enough  volume to fill up the skin. (An analogy would be to compare this condition to having too much wrapping paper and not enough contents.) I can either increase the volume of the breasts, or decrease the amount of skin, or just lift them or do a combination of each of these.

About the Breast Lift Procedure

I can do a simple donut mastopexy just in the office under local anaesthetic (plus some oral sedation if you want this) in about 90 minutes and you can return to work the very next day. This involves an incision around the areola and excising the skin above it. The areola is left attached to you and will retain full sensation. The procedure usually leaves a very inconspicuous scar around the areola. It is a painless procedure after i numb the skin. However, not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. I need to examine you to determine which procedure is best for you.

The second type of mastopexy is a variation on a vertical mastopexy. This requires an incision around the entire areola that extends inferior, to the inframammary crease and may have a short horizontal component. All scarring is hidden by a bra or a low cut dress. The breast tissue is reshaped internally. This is a more complicated procedure that takes approximately 2.5 hours  to carry out. This is always done in the operating room under general anesthesia.

If a breast lift is done as part of a breast augmentation or reduction, I will always do this in the operating room under general anesthesia.

What Post-Op care is required for Breast Lift?

Post-operatively, my mastopexy patients experience surprisingly little pain. After a major mastopexy, some patients say that the breast feels tight, like when they were nursing. After a vertical mastopexy it is important to wear a sports bra afterwards for several weeks to help shape the breast. Most breast scars fade quickly and will continue to become fainter with time. However, it is important to remember that no scar ever truly disappears.
